When you are on a really tight budget but find it necessary to complete a task such as changing out a kitchen counter, the best way is to tear off the existing material and replace it. In this case we are replacing the counter surface with white subway tile and an accent of quartz. Home Depot sells the white tiles for approximately 16 cents per tile. This may change from place to place but regardless it is very inexpensive.

The picture on the right shows the edging beginning to be laid out.
The same view shows the edge tiles and the whole tiles installed. I have used a white mastic found in the tile department of the hardware store. The next step is the cutting of the tiles for the accent strip and the back splash.
